Example of student work:

Rationale 1:

In Spanish in our district, all units have a performance assessment which is usually a written document or a presentation in front of the class. Instead of assessing my 8th grade students with a presentation for a unit on free time activities like we usually do, I had students create a vodcast of where they go in their free time, what they do there, how often they go, and who they go with. Students brought in pictures from home of where they go in their free time and created a movie that included their voice telling the above information. We then watched some of the vodcasts in class. As students watched other vodcasts, they were able to comment on errors that they heard in Spanish and constructively critique the work of others.

These vodcasts impacted student learning because students were more motivated to work on this assessment since they were able to use computers and technology to do it. Since they were more motivated and put in more effort, their grades were higher than in the past when they simply presented in front of the class. When we watched the vodcasts in class, students were much more motivated to pay attention since there was a visual involved, rather than just watching each other talk in front of the class. Being more motivated and engaged increases student learning and understanding.

I developed my skills as well with the vodcast technology. I needed to create my own ahead of time so I could teach students how to make their vodcasts. I gained a lot of confidence for using the technology in class, so I am more apt to use it in the future and feel comfortable. I also needed to create a rubric and gave that to the students ahead of time so they knew exactly how they were being assessed. I realized how important that is to students and will continue to do this in the future as a good assessment strategy.

8.K.2 The teacher knows how to select, construct, and use assessment strategies and instruments appropriate to the learning outcomes being evaluated and to other diagnostic purposes.

  • I wanted to assess the Spanish speaking skills of my students related to free time activities. I know how to create an assessment that not only assesses their skills, but is fun for students to complete using technology.

8.S.1 The teacher appropriately uses a variety of formal and informal assessment techniques (e,g, observation, portfolios of student work, teacher-made tests, performance tasks, projects, students self-assessments, peer assessment, and standardized tests) to enhance her or his knowledge of learners, evaluate students’ progress and performances, and modify teaching and learning strategies.

  • I used a performance task to know how my students are progressing with the free time activities in Spanish. From these vodcasts, I was able to see that the majority of students were able to put together a nice movie of what they did, along with creating grammatically correct Spanish sentences. I did see that students struggled with a specific grammar point (a la versus al in Spanish), and I know I need to modify my teaching strategies around that grammar point in the future.

8.D.1 The teacher values ongoing assessment as essential to the instructional process and recognizes that many different assessment strategies, accurately and systematically used, are necessary for monitoring and promoting student learning.

  • I know that I need to be continually observing and assessing students formally and informally in order to monitor student learning. I also reflect upon these assessments and my lessons to determine how to always be improving student learning.
