Standard 6: Teachers communicate well. The teacher uses effective verbal and nonverbal communication techniques as well as instructional media and technology to foster active inquiry, collaboration, and supportive interaction in the classroom.
I created a Wiki for students in 7th grade Spanish to use and update throughout the semester with information that they learned how to say. The page described themselves with personality traits and their likes and dislikes. It also included information about their school schedule. Each time that students posted and added to their wiki, I gave them feedback by commenting on their wiki and correcting errors in a different color on it. Then, students could revise their page and resubmit for a grade. They were also able to comment on each other’s pages and constructively critique each other’s Spanish skills.
I developed my skills by having students create their Wiki page rather than write a paper. The whole idea of a wiki was new to me, so I needed to plan in advance for when students would need to add to their page. I also needed to continuously log online in order to see who was completing their work. I enjoyed giving written feedback to students online and answering their questions online.
It was very interesting to see student learning improve throughout the semester. When the students added their first paragraph of information, they made many mistakes with accents and punctuation. However, as they continued to add information and saw feedback from me and others, they made fewer and fewer mistakes. By the end of the semester, they had a full page of information in Spanish that they were able to say and communicate. As with other technology, I saw student motivation increase with the wiki. They were much more motivated and excited when I would say that we were heading to the lab to type.

6.K.4 The teacher recognizes the importance of nonverbal, verbal and media communication techniques.
I know that students will be using all types of media to communicate in their future and in jobs. I feel it is important to expose them to a variety of media, such as the Wiki.
6.S.5 The teacher knows how to use a variety of media communication tools, including audiovisual aids and computers, to enrich learning opportunities.
I enriched student learning by having students create their wiki page to communicate about themselves. By the end of the semester, the students were surprised to see the amount of Spanish that they were able to communicate.
6.D.2 The teacher values many ways in which people seek to communicate and encourages many modes of communication in the classroom.
Not only do students communicate verbally, but they were able to communicate nonverbally about themselves, as evidenced by their wiki pages. I feel it is important that students have a chance to share in class, but can also share and ask questions online.
