Action Research Project Introduction

Rationale 1:

I reflected on my classroom and was unhappy with students not being motivated to learning eighth grade Spanish vocabulary. In hope to motivate students more, I developed my action research project around student motivation and achievement. In order to motivate students I had them use iPod Touch flashcards in class rather than the typical paper flashcards. After observing students and having them fill out surveys, I found that students were much more motivated to learn the vocabulary when using the iPod Touches.

Developing this action research project made me really focus on motivating students to do the work and to work on engaging them in class. I found that the technology worked, which will impact my lessons in the future. I plan to use technology more in lessons because I see that students are more motivated.

In my action research, I found that students were more motivated, but the outcome on their learning was not positive. However, there were many limitations in my research study, so I would like to replicate the study to see if I have similar results in following semesters. I expect that when I remove some of the limitations, I will see the technology have a positive impact on student achievement. I am continually developing as a teacher as I reflect on my results and plan how to use what I learn in the future.

KSD

5.K.5 The teacher recognizes factors and situations that are likely to promote or diminish intrinsic motivation, and knows how to help students become self motivated.

  • Through my action research project, I identified that using technology, specifically the iPod Touch, promotes motivation. Some students even said they would download the flashcards onto their personal iPod, showing their self-motivation to continue learning with technology.

5.S.6 The teacher analyzes the classroom environment and makes decisions and adjustments to enhance social relationships, student motivation and engagement, and productive work.

  • In reflecting on my classroom, I made adjustments (adding technology) to enhance student motivation with the iPod Touch flashcards. This motivated students and I plan to continue to use the iPods in the future to motivate students.

5.D.5 The teacher is committed to continuous development of individual students’ abilities and considers how different motivational strategies are likely to encourage this development for each student.

  • I reflected on my classroom and wanted to develop the students’ vocabulary abilities more. I tried using technology with the iPod Touch and found that it motivated students more, which will encourage their vocabulary development as they continue to use them in class.
