The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies, including the use of technology, to encourage children's development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.
Evidence 1:
Vodcast Letter to Oprah
Rationale 1:
As a part of our Teaching with Multimedia class, I created a movie as a comprehension tool for assessing my students. My students had just learned about eating lunch and dinner and about healthy habits for diet and exercise in Spanish. In order to assess them, I created a movie discussing my diet and exercise habits. After watching and listening to the movie on their iPods as many times as they needed, they need to write an answer to my question as if they were Oprah giving me advice. I was able to assess their vocabulary and grammar knowledge, while also assessing their comprehension skills from watching the movie in Spanish.
I added to my repertoire of teaching strategies by creating this vodcast. This was the first time I used Windows Movie Maker and Audacity to create a movie. I also developed by assessing numerous skills at one time-writing, listening, and reading skills. I also used the movie time as a time where I could be talking to students and giving them individual feedback and attention while the remainder of the class worked.
This informal assessment really impacted student learning. The fact that I could be working with students individually really helped. I saw that students enjoyed being able to speak to me individually about their progress. In writing their responses, they needed to use many of their Spanish skills together at one time, rather than just reading or just writing. The assessment gave me an idea of how they are progressing in Spanish as a whole, rather than piece by piece like our usual assessments. Giving students the opportunity to listen and watch as many times as they want individually was also helped to improve student learning. When students can learn at their own pace, they feel more confident in their work.

4.K.3 The teacher knows how to enhance learning through the use of a wide variety of materials and technological resources (e.g. computers, audio-visual technologies, videotapes and discs, local experts, primary documents and artifacts, texts, reference books, literature, and other print resources).
I used technology to create this vodcast for students to watch on the classroom set of iPods. The video enhanced student learning by having students work on a number of their Spanish skills at the same time while working at their own pace.
4.S.2 The teacher uses multiple teaching and learning strategies to engage students in active learning opportunities that promote the development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance capabilities and that help students assume responsibility for identifying and using learning resources.
Instead of using a typical reading, I used a movie to convey my thoughts to students and engaged them by having them watch on the iPods. By having them listen, watch, and then write, students needed to solve my diet and exercise problems while thinking critically about their vocabulary and grammar use.
4.D.1 The teacher values the development of students’ critical thinking, independent problem solving, and
performance capabilities.
I know it is important that students practice their critical thinking and problem solving skills, so I created the video and informal assessment for them to work on their skills.
