Evidence 1:

"Conjugations Back"

Rationale 1:

This is a video that I found while searching for Spanish instructional materials in our EDT 676 iPod class. I used it in order to teach students how to conjugate –AR verbs in 7th grade Spanish. The conjugation of –AR verbs is an extremely difficult topic for students. I spend a lot of time on it in class, with notes, practice, and quizzes. I know that not all students learning by copying notes or with writing practice, so I show them this catchy video on YouTube. It uses a popular song to review the conjugations with students. Then, as we continue to practice in class, the students are able to listen and sing to it to help them learn. This helps the students that are more musically talented or learn by listening.

As a teacher, I have developed by finding a number of technological strategies, such as YouTube videos, to reach all students. I realize that students learn in many ways. I try to use as many strategies as possible that I can fit in so I reach a variety of students-visual learners, auditory learners, spatial learners, and so forth. For –AR verbs, I make sure to use notes for visual learners, manipulatives for spatial learners, and I use this video to reach the auditory learners. This video impacts student learning by supporting learning and reteaching the –AR conjugations in a way that reaches musically and visually talented students. Students frequently sing the song as they are practicing in class and in 8th grade, will still remember the song as we continue conjugating verbs.

KSD

3.K.1 The teacher understands and can identify differences in approaches to learning and performance, including different learning styles, multiple intelligences, and performance modes, and can design instruction that helps use students’ strengths as the basis for growth.

  • I know that students learn in a variety of ways, according to Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences. I know that for topics, trying many strategies is the best way to reach all learners. The music video helps to reach the auditory and musical learners.

3.S.5 The teacher can identify when and how to access appropriate resources to meet the needs of students with particular talents.

  • Students need to be actively engaged to learn best. Using a familiar song for students and putting Spanish instructional words to it makes learning the conjugations fun and more interesting for students and also gives opportunities for students to learn the content in the way they learn best for musically talented students.

3.D.2 The teacher appreciates and values human diversity, shows respect for students’ varied talents and perspectives, and is committed to the pursuit of “individually configured excellence.”

  • I know that students learn in many different ways. Some students love music and love learning lyrics to songs. This music video is great for students to learn Spanish instruction to a popular song, so I use this video to reach those students.
