Coffee Break Spanish Podcast

Rationale 1:

The podcast that I found was called Coffee Break Spanish. This podcast has two people conversing in Spanish at a very basic level. They also explain what they are talking about as they converse. I use this podcast for 8th grade Spanish. I use some of the more basic podcasts as listening practice for the students who are struggling with their listening skills. I have students who are excelling listen to more detailed and longer podcasts. They are able to listen on their iPod if they have extra time in class and sometimes we will listen to the conversations in class.

I have learned to search for activities that have a range of ability, such as the podcasts. While students are able to work on the same basic idea, I can be differentiating according to the ability of each student or groups of students. I am developing as a teacher as I differentiate based on ability. I have also seen a positive impact on the confidence of students who typically struggle because they are succeeding at their ability level. If I were to have all students listen to the same podcast episode, some would be frustrated that it would be too hard, while others would be bored because it is too easy. As an outcome of these podcasts, students are developing their listening skills and are motivated by hearing native speakers speak Spanish.

KSD

2.K.1 The teacher understands how learning occurs -- how students construct knowledge, acquire skills, and develop habits of mind – and how to use instructional strategies that promote student learning for a wide range of student abilities.

  • I have been using podcasts with students to practice their listening skills. In order to account for a wide range of abilities, I have students listen to different episodes that match with their ability level.

2.S.1 The teacher assesses individual and group performance in order to design instruction that meets learners’ current needs in each domain (cognitive, social, emotional, moral, and physical) and that leads to the next level of development.

  • · I design instruction based on the ability of the student. Typically, I will have students listening to 3 different episodes: one difficult, one average, and one fairly easy for students who are struggling. The students will then be grouped accordingly to discuss and push each group to a next level.

2.D.1 The teacher appreciates individual variation at each developmental level and shows respect for the diverse talents of all learners, and is committed to help them develop self-confidence and competence.

  • I appreciate that learners are at different levels of development. I want all students to continue developing, so I plan activities like the podcast episodes that build confidence and still challenge students to take their learning to the next level.
