Standard 10: Teachers are connected with other teachers and the community. The teacher fosters relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support pupil learning and well-being and acts with integrity, fairness and in an ethical manner.
I created a blog for students and parents to view that has the lesson plans and activities that we did in class. I updated this blog weekly so students could see what was to come in the class. Also, students who were absent or sick could check the blog and know what they missed. Parents could see the blog in order to have talking points with their children. I used this blog for both 7th and 8th grade Spanish for one full year. I would also post helpful websites and activities for students to try.
As a teacher, it was important for me to keep up with the blog so students were clear with what was happening in class, what they may have missed, and could see the expectations of what is to come. In the past, I used a monthly newsletter, but using the blog made it much easier to update weekly and keep parents updated with more frequency. By using the blog, I developed by keeping up with lesson plans and preparing ahead of time. It also deepened my relationships with parents by giving them another way to contact me and keep up-to-date. The blog fostered student learning, especially for those who were absent, by giving them a place to go so they knew what they missed or what the homework was. It enhanced student learning also by creating a talking point for parents so they can be involved in their student’s school life. Keeping a relationship with parents is an important way to promote student learning.
KSD
10.K.2 The teacher understands how factors in the students’ environment outside of school (e.g. family circumstances, community environments, health, and economic conditions) may influence students’ lives and learning.
I understand that when parents are involved, students tend to achieve more in school. In order to make sure parents had a relationship to the school, I had the blog available for them to visit so they knew what was happening in Spanish class.
10.S.4 The teacher establishes respectful and productive relationships with parents and guardians from diverse home and community situations and seeks cooperative partnerships in support of student learning and well being.
In order to establish a positive relationship with parents, I made sure they were aware of the focus in Spanish class. They were able to log in to the blog and then were able to comment if they had questions. They also were able to see if their child had homework and knew that I was available to help if needed.
10.D.1 The teacher values and appreciates all aspects of a child’s experience.
Keeping parents involved provides more opportunities for students to talk about their learning. I blog lesson plans to make the connections to home in order to enhance their learning experience.
